Remote Passive Optical Seismometer is a state-of-the-art, unique technology that measures micro-vibrations using natural (and/or artificial) diffused light reflected from surfaces. This unique passive sensor remotely measures vibrations of buildings, ground, foliage, automobiles, etc. that may be associated with various activities that produce the motion of the surface.
This sensor has demonstrated remote detection and identification of:
1. Rotating heavy equipment and sound produced inside buildings by observing concrete and brick exterior
2. Electrical load changes in rotating machinery
3. Acoustical vibrations from a radio inside a car
4. Differences in automobile engine vibrations
5. Sounds (specific tones) by observing nearby foliage
This new paradigm in detection can assist in Battlefield awareness, Structure/building activity detection, Underground activity detection, Remote ID of vehicles (including trucks that may be carrying heavy loads), Sound and speech reconstruction and many other applications.
Measurements have been made at ranges varying from tens of feet to a mile, over the frequency domain of about 10 to 10,000 Hz.
